The mule train

उत्तराखंड की त्रासदी में बहुत ज्यादा नुकसान खच्चरो का भी हुआ है, जिसकी कम ही चर्चा हुई है। न केवल केवल हजारों खच्चरो की जान गई, हजारों लोगों ने अपनी आजीविका का मुख्य साधन भी खो दिया। स्थानीय अनुमानों के हिसाब से, अकेले केदारनाथ में ५००० खच्चर मरे. त्रासदी के पहले एक  खच्चर की कीमत रु ४०-८० हज़ार या अधिक थी। 

हालांकि ये  खच्चर अभी कम उपलब्ध थे, फिर भी, त्रासदी के बाद दूर-दराज इलाकों में राहत पहुँचाने के लिए खच्चर ही काम आये।  यहाँ दिए गए चित्र जिला उत्तरकाशी में गंगोरी से भटवारी जाने के हैं।

One of the biggest but least talked about major loss in Uttrakhand has been of mules. Not only have thousands of mules lost their lives but as a result thousands of people lost their main source of livelihood also. Locals estimate a loss of over 5000 mules in Kedarnath region alone. Pre-disaster, the cost of a mule was anywhere between Rs. 40,000 to 80,000 or more. 

Right now these mules, although rare to find, are often the major mode of reaching out to completely cut off terrains and there are still some places where there isn’t a route even for the mules. Let's  persevere with and preserve traditional instruments, implements and practices that help us remain self-reliant. Milling our own grains at home, we know what we are eating - good, healthy, unadulterated food.

Mankot (Munsiyari block, Pithoragarh) is one of the more seriously affected villages in the 16-17 June disaster. Nearly half the agriculture land, with crops, got washed away and all access to the roadhead cut off. As the deisel supply ran out of stock and the mills became non-functional, people faced the imminent problem of food scarcity, even as the families had their own stored grains.

That was when, this lone Gharelu Chakki in the village proved it worth  and came to the rescue of the villagers. Nearly every hamlet used this hand-operated chakki to mill their daily requirement of grains.

Wouldn't it be so much more sensible to revive the usage of this valuable technology that would help people remain self-reliant in good and bad times. 

१६-१७ जून की भयंकर विपदा में, मनकोट गाँव (मुन्सियारी ब्लाक, पिथोरागढ़) बुरी तरह प्रभावित हुआ. ब्लाक से संपर्क पूरी तरह कट गया, खेती की लगभग आधी  ज़मीन बह गयी, बिजली गुल और डीज़ल का स्टॉक भी ख़त्म हुआ. लोगों के पास कुछ अपना अनाज था पर डीजल चक्कियां भी सब ठप. ऐसे में, गाँव में यह हाथ कि एक चक्की ही थी जो लोगों का सहारा बनी. और तल्ला मनकोट के लगभग सभी परिवारों ने अपनी दैनिक ज़रुरत की पिसाई इस पर पूरी की. 

एक पारंपरिक उपकरण और सरल तक्नीकग्यी जो हमें अच्छे और बुरे समय में आत्मा निर्भर रहने के लिए  उपयोगी सिद्ध होगी। इसे बचाएँ।
