Where have the children gone!

उत्तराखंड के रुद्रप्रयाग जिला के उखीमठ विकास खंड के हर माध्यमिक स्कूल का कोई न कोई बच्चा केदारनाथ आपदा के काल में समां गया है या उनका अभी तक पता नहीं चल पाया है. रुद्रप्रयाग की गुमशुदा सूची में दर्ज 652 व्यक्तियों में से 33 % (220) बच्चे और किशोर हैं. इन गायबो की सूची में से 151 ऐसे हैं जो 15 साल से कम उम्र के थे. उखीमठ विकास खंड के खंड शिक्षा अधिकारी कलम सिंह राणा बताते हैं कि, "अभी तक हमें केवल सरकारी स्कूलों की कक्षा 6 से लेकर 12 तक के 176 बच्चों के आपदा में मरने या गायब होने की आधिकारिक सूचना  है."

218 छात्र संख्या वाले कोटमा इंटर कॉलेज के 19 बच्चे; 400  छात्र संख्या वाले फाटा इंटर कॉलेज के 18 बच्चे आपदा की चपेट में गायब हैं. इसी तरह लम्गोंदी के 12, ल्वारा के 11  व खुमेरा के ८ बच्चे गायब हैं.  

मई-जून महीनों में जब अधिक यात्री आते हैं उसी दौरान स्कूलों में छुट्टी होती है, और अस्थाई श्रमिकों की कमी इन स्कूली बच्चों से पूरी होती है.  राओंलेक इंटर कॉलेज के प्रधानाचार्य कुंवर सिंह राणा बताते हैं कि गर्मियों में कठिन मेहनत से कमाए गए कुछ हज़ार रुपयों में ये स्कूली बच्चे आने वाले साल के लिए पुस्तकें या कपडे खरीदते थे. इस क्षेत्र में यह प्रचलन में कई दशकों से है.

In Ukhimath blocks of Rudraprayag district at least one child in every secondary school has either died in or is missing since the Kedarnath disaster. Of the 652 people listed as missing in Rudraprayag, 33% (220) are either children or youth. And 151 of these are under 15 years of age. Block Education Officer (Ukhimath Block) Kalam Singh Rana says, "So far we only  have official information of 176 children from class 6 to class 12 in government schools, dead or missing."

19 out of 218 children from Kotma Inter College, 18 children out of 400 from Phata Inter College are missing since the disaster. Likewise, 12 children from village Lamgondi, 11 from Lvara and 8 from village Khumera are missing.

The months of May-June which sees maximum pilgrim/tourist arrival coincides with the period of school holidays, and the school children make up a good percentage of casual labour provided on the route. Kunwar Singh Rana, Principal of Rounlek Inter College informs that from the hard earned few thousand rupees that children collect during that period, they buy books or clothes for the coming year. This has been in practice for quite a few decades.

Children write letters to Gandhiji

सर्वोदय मंडल देहरादून और चिंतन हिमालय द्वारा प्रोत्साहित, मुन्सियारी ब्लाक (पिथोरागढ़) में राजकीय इंटर कॉलेज मवानी-दवानी व् शहीद भीम सिंह धामी विद्या मंदिर, बंगापनी के विद्यार्थियों ने गाँधी जयंती के अवसर पर, महात्मा गाँधी को पत्र लिखे।

गांधीजी को पत्र में बच्चों ने जून २०१३ में उनके क्षेत्र में हुई तबाही और उसके बाद का वर्णन किया। कक्षा ५-८ के बच्चों ने अपने घर-गाँव की स्तिथि तक अपने को सीमित रखा, जब की कक्षा ९-१० के विद्यार्थियों ने राज्य स्तर की बातें रखीं और कक्षा ११-१२ के विद्यार्थियों ने देश स्तर की बातें रखीं। विद्या मंदिर के कक्षा ५ से नीचे के बच्चों ने चित्रकला प्रतियोगिता में भाग लिया और उन्होंने गांधीजी से सम्बंधित विषयों पर चित्र बनाये।

कुल मिलाकर, पत्र लेखन में ३६ और चित्रकला में १६ बच्चों ने भाग लिया। कार्यक्रम का सञ्चालन इंटर कॉलेज मवानी-दवानी में प्रवक्ता श्री राम कुमार मिश्र ने किया।
 
Inspired by Sarvodaya Mandal (Dehra Dun) and Chintan Himalaya, involved post-disaster in Munsiyari block (Pithoragarh), students from two schools (namely Rajkiya Inter College, Mawani-Dawani and Shaheed Bhim Singh Dhami Vidya Mandir, Bangapani) wrote letters to Mahatma Gandhi on his 144th birth anniversary - 2 October 2013.

The children wrote letters to Gandhi on the post-disaster scenario in their villages and the region, and problems that they have since been facing. While the children from classes 5-8 limited their issues to those at the village level, classes 9-10 students wrote of concerns at the State level, and the students of classes 11-12 took a countrywide perspective. Children below class 5 at Vidya Mandir did not write letters but instead took part in a drawing competition - on any subject related to Gandhiji.

In all, 36 students participated in letter-writing and 16 participated in the drawing competition. The event was conducted by Sh Ram Kumar Mishra, Lecturer at the Inter College, Mawani-Dawani.

What's most on children's minds?

पिथोरागढ़ के मुन्सियारी ब्लॉक के गोरीगंगा-पार का उमरगढ़ा गाँव, उन दो गावों में से एक है जिसने, डॉ. सत्येन्द्र के शब्दों में, "हमें अपनाया है'' और जहाँ RAHAT समूह, स्थानीय लोगों के साथ कंधा से कंधा मिलाकर एक टूटे जीवन की कड़ियों को पुनः जोड़ने की कोशिश कर रहा है।  आपदा के दो महीने बाद भी लोग तिरपाल और पतले प्लास्टिक के नीचे जीवन बसर कर रहे हैं।  गाँव की लगभग पूरी सिंचित ज़मीन बह चुकी है।  राहत लेने के लिए निकटतम स्थान मदकोट है, जो २० कि.मी. और लौट-फेर 18-20  कमर-तोड़ घंटे दूर है। सभी रास्ते टूट चुके हैं और स्कूल भी अभी तक नहीं खुले हैं।  जीवन-क्रम पूरा उल्ट-पुल्ट हो गया है।  

पर बच्चे तो बच्चे हैं, वे कोई न कोई खेल में अपने को रमा लेते हैं। ऋतू सोगानी ने, जो आजकल उमरगढ़ा में  है, यह तस्वीर भेजी कि बच्चे आजकल "घर-घर" बनाना खेल रहे है। . 

क्या खेल सिर्फ खेल होता है ?  

Village Umargada in the distant Gori-paar area of Munsiyari Block, Pithoragarh, is one of the two villages "which has adopted us" (in the words of Dr Satyendra) where the RAHAT team, together with the people, is working towards rebuilding life. All 14 households in the village are "house-less" for the last two months and living under improvised tents made from tirpal and plastic sheets. Almost entire foodstock gone, as also most of the irrigated land. Madkot, the nearest relief point is approximately 20 km and one time to-n-fro 18-20 hrs back-breaking walk away. Life totally disrupted. Schools still not open. All regular connecting paths and roads gone. 

But children, being children, find time to play. What do they play?
