That fateful night

अशोक और राय सिंह, रामबाड़ा (केदार घाटी): "हमारा  काम, रामबाड़ा व केदारनाथ के बीच, अपने खच्चरों पर लोगों को और माल ढोना था. 16 जून को हमने रामबाड़ा में जल-स्तर बढते देखा और एकदम ही समझ गए कि गाँव डूबने वाला है. हम जंगल की ओर बढ़ गए. रात को, जंगल में भूस्खलन हुआ, जो कहीं ऊपर से शुरू हुआ था. उससे पहले हवा में अजीब से गैस फैली जिसमे सांस लेना मुश्किल होने लगा. उस रात जो कोई जंगल की ओर भागा, अधिकाँश ने उस अजीब सी गैस की बात की. पहले गैस फैली और उसके बाद भूस्खलन; ज्यादाकर लोग इन दोनों से मरे.

"वे उसी तरह, बैठे-बैठे मर गए. कल्पना करो कि कैसे हुआ होगा - पहला वार पावों पर होता है और वे टूट व बेकार हो जाते हैं. तो आदमी ज़मीन पर बैठ जाता है. धीरे-धीरे, हाथ और बाकि शरीर भी सुन्न पड़ जाते हैं. कितने ही सारे लोग उसी अवस्था में मृत पाए गए. बाढ़ के आलावा लोग मरे ठण्ड, भूख और बुरी तरह भीग जाने से. और जो 17 जून की बाढ़ में बच भी गए, वे मरे कई दिन कपड़े न बदल पाने, गील कपड़ों में ही रहने से, कई दिन तक कुछ भी न खा पाने से."     

"Our work was transporting goods and people on mules from Rambada to Kedarnath. On 16 June, we saw water rising in the market area, and immediately realized that the village was going to drown. We shifted to the forest. At night, there was a landslide, coming from somewhere higher up in the forest. First there were strange gases in the air and it became hard to breathe. Next there was a landslide coming down the forest. Most of the people who fled to the forest that night talked about strange gases. It was because of that and the landslide, that maximum number of people died.

"And they died just the way they were sitting. Imagine how it happened -  first it hit the legs, the legs break and stop functioning. Then the person sits down. Slowly the arms and the rest of the body become numb. So many people were found sitting this way. Death due to cold, hunger and getting wet were other reasons beyond just the flood. People not having dry clothes to change for days and no food to eat died even if they survived the flood on 17th."
