Gangani HEP on Yamuna causes damage

यमुनोत्री से 40 किमी पहले ही, खराड़ी गाँव चार-धाम यात्रा में एक खासा पड़ाव है. 2008-09  में एक रीजेंसी गंगानी एनेर्जी प्रा. ली. नाम की कम्पनी ने, खराड़ी से 5 किमी नीचे यमुना नदी पर 8 मेगावाट जलविद्युत परियोजना पर काम शुरू किया - नदी की धारा को मोड़ने के लिए मुहाना, पानी को ले जाने के लिए पाइप और एक पावरहाउस।

पिछले साल, 3  अगस्त 2012 को हनुमान चट्टी में बादल फटने से यमुना में द्रुत-बाढ़ आ गई। जलविद्युत परियोजना पर निर्माण ने बाढ़ को बायीं ओर मोड़ा जिसकी वजह से खराड़ी में 9 होटल  बह गए और नदी में पड़ी परियोजना की पाइप को भारी नुकसान हुआ।

इस साल 17 जून को क्षेत्र में फिर बादल फटने और भारी बारिश के बाद परियोजना पर निर्माण ने बाढ़ का रुख फिर गाँव-बाज़ार की ओर किया, जिसमे 28 घर-दुकाने साफ़ हो गए। उनके अलावा, 25 संपतियां खतरे की जद में आ गईं जो किसी भी बारिश में, कभी भी बह सकती हैं। जिला प्रशाशन ने पूरे खराड़ी गाँव-बाज़ार को आपदा प्रभावित घोषित कर दिया है।   

Kharadi, a popular night halt on river Yamuna, is about 40 km short of Yamunotri. In 2008-09, Regency Gangani Energy Pvt. Ltd. started constructing a 8 MW run-of-the-river hydroelectric project on river Yamuna, immediately upstream of Kharadi village. A diversion head and pipes to convey the diverted river water and a power house constructed about 5 km downstream at Gangani.

Last year, on 3 August 2012 night, a cloud burst in Hanuman Chatti area caused flash flood, which was obstructed by the project's diversion head and diverted towards its more populated left bank. The flood swept away about 9 hotels and houses at Kharadi, besides causing damage to the pipes laid in and near the riverbed.

This year, on 17 June 2013, another cloud burst and heavy rains in the region resulted once again in the river getting diverted by the project construction, sweeping away about 28 properties in the Kharadi market village. Since then, additional 25 households have come within the slip zone and are at the risk of getting washed away any time in the event of high rainfall or flood. The District Administration has declared the entire Kharadi village-market as disaster affected.
