आपदा प्रभावित क्षेत्रों में करीब १२०० टन सेब और आलू सड़ रहा है क्योंकि सडकों कि हालत अभी भी खराब होने से उत्पादन को बाज़ार तक नहीं लाया जा सका.
गढ़वाल मंडल विकास निगम के प्रबंधक प्रताप शाह के अनुसार, "अगस्त में सरकार द्वारा हमें दिये गए निर्देश के अनुसार उत्तरकाशी, टिहरी, पौड़ी, चमोली, रुद्रप्रयाग और चकरौता के किसानों की आजीविका में सहयोग के मद्देनज़र हमने उनसे न्यूनतम समर्थन मूल्य पर सेब रु ३० प्रति किलो और आलू रु १५ प्रति किलो ख़रीदा। हमने माल इकठ्ठा करने के लिए बड़ी तादाद में लोग लगाये और माल को खाली घरों में स्टॉक भी कर के रखा. पर अधिकांश केस में माल को सडकों की खराब स्थिति की वजह से बाज़ार तक पहुँचाना मुश्किल हुआ."
उन्होंने कहा कि घोड़े और खच्चरों से माल ले जाना अव्यवहारिक और महंगा भी पड़ता। निगम ने कहीं-कहीं गाड़ियां किराये पे ली पर वे भी महंगी पड़ी क्योंकि ड्राईवर लोगो ने खराब रास्तों पर गाड़ी ले जाने के लिए बहुत ज़यादा पैसे मांगे। ऐसी स्थिति में अधिकांश माल खराब हो गया है, और जो बचा, वो भी बिक्री लायक नहीं है.
Around 1200 tons of apples and potatoes
have rotted in areas affected by the June flash floods in Uttarakhand as the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) could
not move them to the markets due to poor connectivity of roads. Many roads are
still not in a passable state in the region.
GMVN's general manager of marketing Pratap Shah said, "GMVN had no option but to comply with the Government Order issued in August this year where we were asked to buy the apple at the minimum support price of Rs 30 and potato at Rs 15 per kg from the farmers in Uttarkashi, Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Chakrata districts to support farmers and protect the produce. We employed a large workforce to collect the produce and stock them up in vacant houses. But it became difficult to transport it to markets in most cases because of bad roads."
He said that the alternate option of carrying the stock on mules and horses was unviable and very expensive. In some cases they hired vehicles but that proved expensive as drivers quoted higher prices to navigate broken roads. As a result most of the stock perished after lying piled up for months together and the remaining one is not saleable either.
